Special Accommodations

Certain accommodation requests may be granted for the following reasons:

1. Documented Learning Differences

2. Documented Emergencies

3. Religious Observations

4. Boston College Athletics

Please be aware that requests for accommodations must be made immediately.  The professor must be alerted of any request for special accommodation by the end of the fourth class in the semester.  With the exception of emergencies and/or documented medical conditions diagnosed during the semester, the professor will not grant any individual accommodations after the fourth class of the semester.

Please also note that if a request for accommodations is granted, the professor will discuss a specific accommodation plan with the student.  Once that plan has been discussed, the student (barring any additional documented emergencies) will be held accountable to details of the particular accommodation planned discussed at the beginning of the semester. For more details, please read the following:

1. Documented Learning Differences

If you have any kind of different learning styles, needs, or circumstances that might affect your work and participation in this class, appropriate accommodations can be made. If you have already registered your needs with academic affairs, they will notify me of your needs. You should feel free to speak with me in the beginning of the semester if you wish, but you should not feel pressured to do so.  If you have a learning difference that you have not registered with academic affairs, I will have no way of knowing about it unless you reach out to me.  Please know that I will likely also refer you to the appropriate office of academic affairs as well. All accommodations will be laid out in within the first 7 days of classes;  if you have not worked out any alternative work plans within the first week of class, you will be held responsible for the course requirements as listed on the syllabus.  Exception: if you are diagnosed with a learning semester mid-semester, in this event, please register that diagnosis with academic affairs, and alert me as soon as possible, so we can make arrangements.

2. Documented Emergencies

If you or a legal dependent has a critical health emergency that prevents you from attending class or completing assignments, the first thing you should do is take care of yourself and/or your dependent.  If you are in need of further assistance, you should contact the counseling center, student health, and or your dean of student affairs.  When you are able you should procure documentation for the emergency from a medical provider or other appropriate officer, and then you should contact me so that we can make arrangements for the possible completion of assignments.

Please know that some emergencies have serious ongoing effects, and the best possible accommodation may be for you to withdraw from the course.  HOWEVER, please speak with me and/or your academic adviser before making any serious decisions.  If an acceptably modified plan is feasible, I am happy to work with you, your other professors, and relevant BC staff, to make sure that plan is put in place.

Other emergencies:  (i.e. There is a death in your immediate family or a pipe bursts in your building right before you’re leaving for class.) The same policy applies as for health emergencies, but once again, if you are experiencing ongoing or multiple emergencies, we may need to discuss the benefits of withdrawing from the course.

3. Religious Observations

If you observe religious holy days or practices that conflict with meeting times or due date, you must tell the professor within the first week of  your enrollment in the class.  At that time the instructor will make any necessary accommodations.  These changes will be presented to you in writing within a week, and you will be expected to adhere to this changes.  Note: At times I may give extensions for assignments.  While I will try to keep in mind people’s particular schedules, remember that extensions are a gift.  If the extension falls in a conflict time, you should plan to turn your assignment in earlier.

4. Boston College Athletics

If you are a Boston College athlete, you should provide me with a schedule of your away games including any potential tournament/playoff/championship games.  Mandatory Away Games will not be held against your course participation grade.  However you will be expected to complete all assignments.  Once you share your away-game schedule, I will make any necessary modifications in terms of presentation dates, etc.  You will be expected to adhere to this modified schedule.    Note: At times I may give extensions for assignments.   Remember that extensions are a gift.  If the extension falls in a conflict time, you should plan to turn your assignment in earlier.
